Peacekeeping military exercise concludes in Mongolia

ULAN BATOR, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — A multinational peacekeeping military exercise concluded in Mongolia Sunday, with a closing ceremony 65 km east of the capital Ulan Bator.

Up to 360 military personnel from Mongolia, India, Thailand, Nepal and the United States participated in the field training exercise, code-named Khaan Quest 2008, at the training area.

Tsevegsuren Togoo, chief of staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces, said at the ceremony that the soldiers were trained for peacekeeping skills such as foot patrol, convoy and disarmament, adding that the multinational field exercise has attained its goal. (more…)

Mongolia’s Stock Exchange, Asia’s Smallest, to Add Derivatives

Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) — Mongolia’s stock exchange is studying plans to offer derivative products within two to three years to boost trading at Asia’s smallest bourse.

Margin trading, where investors take out loans to buy shares, will also be introduced, Tsendmaa Tsedev, head of the listing and surveillance department at Mongolian Stock Exchange, said in an interview in Ulan Bator yesterday. The bourse is working with the Korea Exchange to improve its trading systems, she said.

“The infrastructure of the stock market is under- developed,” Tsedev said. “We want to upgrade our trading process to international standards.” (more…)

Why Mongolia wants more neighbours

At a training centre west of Ulan Bator, troops from Mongolia, the US and a host of other nations are taking part in the Khaan Quest 2008 military exercises.

Over a three-week period, almost 500 soldiers and military representatives from around the world will participate in drills aimed at improving multinational peacekeeping operations.

Two hundred and twenty of the troops are Mongolian and another 100 are from the US. Representatives from Thailand, Nepal, France and India are also taking part. (more…)

Capital inflows to Asia slow down amid global financial turmoil - Fitch

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Fitch Ratings said capital inflows to Asia have started slowing down given the heightened risk aversion of global investors and the deteriorating economic fundamentals of the region along with the global economy.

Fitch said although first quarter 2008 data suggests the region continues enjoying strong net FDI inflows and is still receiving cross-border loans from international banks, foreign purchases into local equity markets have already recorded net withdrawals, while international issuances of debt securities seem to have slowed down.

During the first quarter, among capital importers in the region, the major support came from China, India and Singapore, while net FDI inflows remained stable for Mongolia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. (more…)

Mongolia launches multinational peacekeeping training exercise

ULAN BATOR, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) — Mongolia launched a multinational peacekeeping training exercise under the code name of Khaan Quest 2008 Thursday, with an opening ceremony 65 km east of the capital Ulan Bator.

Up to 360 military personnel from Mongolia, India, Thailand, Nepal and the United States are participating in the 17-day exercise, involving drillmasters’ training, field exercises and medical training.

The exercise is aimed at improving the tactics used in UN peacekeeping operations, according to the Mongolian Ministry of Defense. (more…)

Russia: PAVA exported 31.600 tonnes of flour in 2008

PAVA company is increasing its developing rates for the foreign market. During the first eight months of 2008, PAVA exported 31.600 tonnes of flour on the foreign market, or 83.9% of planned volumes to be exported in 2008, according to the company.

Further, PAVA has contracts with 13 countries including Mongolia, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Somalia, Ethiopia, North Korea, Bangladesh, Thailand and others for continuing exports.

Dour display sends Amnat crashing out

BEIJING : Light-flyweight Amnat Ruenroeng missed out on winning a medal when he was defeated 5-2 by Mongolia’s Serdamba Purevdorj in the quarter-finals last night.

The ex-convict failed to deliver in one of the most important bouts of his career and didn’t appear to try very hard for victory.

In one of the worst fights of the tournament, both sides fought cautiously and the referee had to tell them to box on several occasions. (more…)

Bone fragments collected from mortuary

KUALA LUMPUR: The bone fragments of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu were collected from the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital mortuary yesterday by the honorary consul of Mongolia in Malaysia, Datuk Syed Abdul Rahman Al Habshi and Oyu Vasha, the second secretary to the Embassy of Mongolia in Thailand.

Both arrived at the mortuary at 3.45 pm yesterday and left 40 minutes later empty handed. They returned at 5.25 pm and half an hour later emerged from the mortuary’s office with Vasha carrying a small cardboard box in her hands, which is believed to contain Altantuya’s bone fragments.

Syed Abdul Rahman said they were unable to claim the remains earlier as they had not been able to obtain Altantuya’s death certificate. (more…)
