Shooting silver gives Mongolia first Games medal

Mongolia has claimed silver in the women’s 25-metre pistol shoot, whipping that country’s journalists into rapture on day 5 of the Beijing Olympics.

Radio Australia’s Tanya O’Shea reports Gundegmaa Otryad’s medal is the country’s first of the Games

Ortyad scored 792.2, coming in behind China’s Ying Chen on 793.4, and ahead of Munkhbayar Dorjsuren, who was born in Mongolia but is shooting for Germany at the Games, with a score of 789.2.

Meanwhile, Mongolia’s Serdamba Purevdorj had progressed to the Round of 16 in the men’s 48kg boxing with a victory over Ronald Serugo of Uganda.

Foreign drudges jostle to Mongolia

According to the survey, conducted by Labor, care and services department of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Labor, 46985 foreign citizens were employed in Mongolia. The Department grants permissions on importing foreign labor force. The number of foreign workers reached 36 thousand as of the first eight months of the year 2008, going up by 7000 in comparison to that of the previous year, via unofficial calculation. This increase in foreign citizen employment is related to the Government acceleration of the 40.000 household apartment program. Thus it is essential for Mongolia to increase the number of cadres to engage in construction.

Surveys carries out by the Ministry of Construction and urban development suggest that it is essential to import 10 thousand foreign work forces. (more…)

Irish news on Badar-Uugan’s next rival

Enkhbat Badar-Uugan, 23, World Championship silver medalist of Mongolia, defeated his first rival Mexico’s  Oscar  Valdez yesterday. His next competitor is Ireland’s youngest male athlete John Joe Nevin.

Irish news reporter in Beijing writes that,

Classy display from Nevin continues perfect start in the ring.

Ireland’s youngest male Olympian, John Joe Nevin, believes anything is possible after surviving yesterday’s war of attrition with Algerian Abdelhalim Ourradi in the Workers’ Gymnasium.

The Mullingar 19-year-old survived the docking of two points in an angry, untidy encounter to win 9-4 in front of a boisterous Irish following. The result reverses a countback defeat Nevin suffered against the same fighter in a French training camp two months ago.

He now faces World Championship silver medallist Badar-Uugan Enkhbat of Mongolia next Friday for a place in the last eight of the bantamweight tournament. (more…)

Gundegmaa is a world champion for 25m pistol, and 3 times world cup winner. Now, heartbreak of medal hopefuls tends to boxing where 3 Mongolian boxers already won in their first match.

North Korea exhibition fair opens

Exhibition fair of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea opens a fair exhibiting national pharmacy, embroidery arts, shoes and handcraft products in the IT Park. About ten organizations including International Handcraft Company, Ginseng, Kenrein and Mannyong attend the fair, strengthening bilateral collaboration of the two countries and promoting goods and products of the country. Also Ginseng Pharmacy Company, which extracts all its drugs from herbs, provided advices to customers. Well known in the world and in the country for its ginseng products, the company demonstrated ginseng tea, tiger bone spirit infusion, pills extracted from deer antler and anti-drug pills. These products are sold between MNT 4000 and MNT 287’500. The exhibition will be open until 19th of August.

Mongolian takes leads in women’s 25m pistol

BEIJING, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Mongolia’s Gundegmaa Otryad qualified for the women’s 25m pistol event on Wednesday taking a massive 3-point lead into the finals.
Otryad, 30, scored 291 of a possible 300 in the 30-shot precision segment before hitting a near-perfect 299 in the 30-shot rapid fire part for a total 590 that equalled an Olympic record set by China’s Tao Luna in Sydney in 2000.
Germany’s Munkhbayar Dorjsuren, who was born in Mongolia but became a German citizen in 2002, was second on 587. (more…)

New Perspectives: Photography From China And Mongolia

Glimpses of other people’s lives are always fascinating, so it’s unsurprising that the two photographers in this exhibition chose to document everyday existence in China and Mongolia.

Grace Gelder hails from Wolverhampton, and graduated last year with an MA in International Photojournalism, Documentary And Travel Photography. She hopes to counteract misconceptions of Mongolia as an under-developed country, and her series of striking colour portraits, each depicting one woman in her professional context, follows up a UN report last year that placed Mongolia first in a league table for women’s participation in the workforce. It’s believed to be solved via talks

Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia expressed the position on South Ossetia, “Mongolian MFA is very concerned about South Ossetia issues, especially it feels sorry for the loss of people. It is believed that the issues would be solved via talks and negotiations in amiable ways.”

Nancy Soderberg visits

Ms. Nancy Soderberg, Distinguished Visiting Scholar of the University of North Florida, Senior Policy Advisor of the International Crisis Group, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, 3rd ranking official of National Security Council at the White House and Deputy Director of the Presidential Transition for National Security, visited Mongolia yesterday. Ms. Soderberg has a deep understanding of policy-making and negotiations at the highest levels of government and the United Nations. Ms. Soderberg served as the Foreign Policy Director for the Clinton/Gore 1992 Campaign and worked as the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy. She has been active in national Democratic politics since the early 1980’s, serving in a variety of capacities in national presidential campaigns since 1984.

She worked closely with Michael Bloomberg, Governor of New York. With nearly twenty years of experience in the formation of U.S. foreign policy, she has been involved in most of the conflicts around the world and speaks and writes regularly on national security issues. (more…)
