ULAN BATOR, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Mongolia’s new parliament resumed its first session and swore in legislators Thursday.
Proceedings at the opening session on July 23 had been stalled when the main opposition Democratic Party staged a walkout alleging vote fraud in the June polls.
The country’s two biggest parties, the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) and the Democratic Party, won 42 and 25seats respectively In the 76-seat parliament.
The new parliament will elect a chairman soon and form a new government.
Danzan Lundeejantsan, chairman of the last parliament, said the new parliament would confront major issues including the development of a social economy.
Mongolia held its parliamentary elections on June 29, and preliminary results from the Mongolian General Committee of Election (MGCE) showed the MPRP had won the elections.
On July 1, supporters of the Democratic and other parties marched in protest against alleged vote fraud in the elections. The protests later turned into riots, in which five people died and more than 300 were injured.
The Democratic Party accused the MGCE of being ineffective in organizing the election and its legislators walked out of the first session of the new parliament on July 23.
In the wake of the walkout, the MPRP and the Democratic Party held consultations and reached an agreement on the amendment of laws, and the economic and social development of the country.
