Damdin Demberel elected as chairman of Mongolian parliament
ULAN BATOR, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — Mongolia’s new parliament on Monday appointed Damdin Demberel, member of the steering council of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) and also a member of parliament, as its chairman.
Damdin Demberel, first elected as member of parliament in 1992,was reelected in 2008.
From 2000 to 2004, Demberel served as chairman of the parliament’s standing committee of political power construction. He became minister of social welfare and labor in 2007.
Demberel said the new parliament would give priority to boosting socio-economic development of the country.
Parliamentary elections were held on June 29 in Mongolia. The MPRP and the Democratic Party each won 42 and 25 seats respectively in the 76-member parliament.
The Citizens Will-Republican Party and an independent candidate got one seat each. But the results for the remaining seven seats have not been published yet.
The MPRP has the right to form a new government on its own, according to the law.
