Mongolian lawmakers walk out of session

The Associated Press reports that,

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia (AP) — Opposition lawmakers walked out of a Mongolian parliamentary session Wednesday before they were to be sworn in, saying they refused to participate because last month’s election was fraudulent.

Accusations that the ruling Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party rigged the June 29 poll led to rioting in the capital of the fledgling democracy that left five dead, 300 injured, and hundreds detained.

The violence prompted President Nambaryn Enkhbayar to declare the country’s first-ever state of emergency. (more…)

Newly Elected Members Cannot Take Oaths

New parliamentarians, elected as results of the Parliament Election, held on June 29, expected to take oaths and hold the first session today, but they didn’t. 25 members, elected from the Democratic Party attended the opening of the first session, however they quit the session at 01.30, claiming the election results were paradoxical. According to legislations, Parliament should be active at the oath taking of 57 Parliament members but there were 39 MPRP members, 1 independent and 1 Civil Will member. President of Mongolia N.Enkhbayar, who started the session, called the Leaders of parties including MPRP, DP and CW to collaborate on solving the current condition in accordance with Parliament procedures and start activities of the new Parliament ASAP. And the first session of the Parliament takes a break.

Will Korean visa conditions for Mongols be changed?

Representatives, headed by Chu Gui Ho, Head of Border Inspection and Foreign Citizen policy Department of Korean Republic visited the President of Mongolia N.Enkhbayar, exchanged views on creating favorable conditions for citizens to visit mutually and to be employed. Expressing his gratitude for running positive policy on Mongols living and working in Korea, treating them humanely, the President also expressed hi satisfaction on extension and development of bilateral cooperation and relation and highlighted relations between citizens would be the basis of cooperation and friendship.

Mr. Chu Gui Ho recalled his visit to Mongolia in 2001, expressed his gratitude to the President for the receipt and promised to work for increasing number of Mongolian citizens to work and visit in Korea. According to Mr. Chu Gui Ho, the number of Mongols entering Korea reached over 40 thousand per annum and 35 thousand Mongols are studying and working there. Also he informed on his further activities on increasing number of visitors, mitigating visa conditions and expanding multi-visa terms.

Trade and Economic Relations will be Recovered

Mr. Václav Jílek, Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of Czech to Mongolia visited and handed over his credential letters to the President of Mongolia N.Enkhbayar. President says Mongolia-Czech relations are at high level, however collaborations should be extended in areas including education, culture, trade and environmental protection. Also he expressed his hope that bilateral trade cooperation would be recovered to a level which was before and Czech would be initiative in providing aid to developing countries programme.

Ambassador Václav Jílek noted that bilateral cooperation in trade and economic sector was not bad though it is not up to expected level. “10 years ago there were Czech buses in the street, but now none can be seen. I’ll do my best to recover bilateral cooperation and relations to a historic level”, said the Ambassador and forwarded the invitation of Václav Klaus President of Czech Republic to the President of Mongolia.

Mongolia is to Employ Work Force from North Korea

At the submission of the Government of Mongolia, the Parliament ratified Mongolia-North Korea Inter-governmental Agreement on exchanging work forces on the 20th of July, 2007. According to the Agreement, Ministry of Social Welfare and Labor of Mongolia is to negotiate in the near future with Foreign Trade Ministry on realizing the agreement and exchange of work force, especially number and need of work force, the minimum wage /by USD/, labor conditions /normal and abnormal/, social welfare /social insurance/ and therefore those interested in employing North Korean wok force in 2009 should formulate their TORs accurately as well as submit them to the MSWL within 23 July. Currently orders should be submitted on the basis of position vacancy since number of workers is not specified yet.

First session of Mongolia’s new parliament to be held next week

ULAN BATOR, July 18 (Xinhua) — Mongolia’s new parliament will hold its first session on July 23, Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar announced Friday.

    Tsakhia Elbegdorj, chairman of the Democratic Party, said on Friday members of his party elected to the new parliament would not attend the first session.

    He also accused the government, led by the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP), of failing to take effective measures to appease post-election riots in the capital Ulan Bator and electoral fraud. Motion to impeach Mongolian gov’t rejected

ULAN BATOR, July 17 (Xinhua) — The parliament of Mongolia on Thursday rejected the motion to impeach the government issued by the opposition Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party accused the government, led by the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP), of failing to take effective measures to appease post-election riots in the capital Ulan Bator, thus causing casualties and damage to property. (more…)

We deeply regret the violence that erupted after the public protest on July 1, 2008, leaving several people dead, many injured, and valuable public and private property destroyed, including precious cultural artifacts. We believe this violence was an extreme expression of deep-seated anger and frustration accumulated by significant sections of the society as a result of persistent injustice and corruption.

We regret that during this critical time of public unrest and violence, political parties are seeking to maximize their political gain in pursuit of their narrow interests with no regard for people’s lives and human rights and freedoms. (more…)

Mongolia kicks off parliamentary election

China Daily writes that:

ULAN BATOR - Mongolians went to the polling stations Sunday morning across the country to elect new members of the nation’s parliament - the State Great Hural.
Starting from 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT), the polling stations opened for people to cast their votes to elect 76 members of parliament.
The election has registered 311 candidates nominated from 11 parties and one coalition, as well as 45 independent candidates. The new parliament members will serve a four-year term. (more…)
