Allens launches Mongolian office

Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens) is to broaden its existing Asian network by opening an office in Mongolia.

Located in the capital of Ulaanbaatar, the office will support international clients who are operating in and around the burgeoning resources industry.

Allens Board member and energy and resources partner Erin Feros said that Allens, a member of the Business Council of Mongolia, had been undertaking work there for close to a decade.

‘During the past 12 months those work levels have intensified significantly,’ Ms Feros said.

‘The partnership’s decision to establish a formal presence in Mongolia is therefore very much client driven.

‘Having had a number of partners and lawyers working on the ground for some time, we’ve been approached by a range of other international clients, with existing or planned operations in Mongolia, who have asked us to assist them,’ Ms Feros said.

The firm is currently advising a range of international companies in the region, including long-standing client Rio Tinto, whose joint venture Mongolian Oyu Tolgoi project is the world’s largest undeveloped copper and gold mine.

‘We have one of the largest energy and resources teams in Asia and we’ll naturally be drawing on that expertise. In the past few weeks alone we’ve had partners and lawyers from our Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Singapore and Hong Kong offices meeting and working with clients in Ulaanbaatar.’

While a primary focus will be energy and resources, Allens will continue to be well equipped to advise on corporate, capital markets, construction, infrastructure and project finance matters.
