Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The first-ever NAMBC USDOC Certified Trade Mission to Mongolia, September 14-19, will bring senior executives of 10 US companies to Mongolia. The Trade Mission will be accompanied by the Honorable Michelle O’Neill, Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, and Steve Saunders, President of the NAMBC.

The Mission is intended for (1) senior executives of new-to-Mongolia American companies and (2) executives of companies already active or invested in Mongolia who have not previously visited the country.

The Mission will visit Ulaanbaatar September 14-19. No other cities will be visited because of time limitations. The Trade Mission program continues through the evening of Friday, September 19, and will include a reception in honor of Mission delegates hosted by US Ambassador Mark Minton. New Sant Maral survey on attitudes towards foreign investment commissioned by NAMBC to be presented at Investors Conference on September 19. The NAMBC has commissioned the Sant Maral Foundation, Mongolia’s premier marketing and public opinion research institution,  to take a national poll on Mongolian attitudes towards foreign investment, which will be presented on the afternoon of September 18 prior to the Investors Conference segment on “Politics, Parliament and Policy.”

The survey results will be presented by Mr. L. Sumati, Executive Director of Sant Maral, which he founded in 1994 as a non-profit, public benefit NGO. Since their first poll in 1995, Sant Maral has earned a reputation for providing objective, unbiased and highly accurate information on changes in Mongolian society and politics. Sumati believes that “knowledge is the driving force behind democracy.”

Opening reception of Invetsors Conference on September 17 honors the “US Alumni of Mongolia” (USAM), graduates of American colleges and universities, which includes many MPs, current and former cabinet and subcabinet members, and key executives in Mongolian and foreign companies.. The NAMBC is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Meeting of USAM next month in UB.

Note it is not yet certain whether the Prime Minister’s Roundtable will be on September 18 or 19.

Her Excellency Anna Biolik, Canadian newly appointed ambassador to Mongolia, shall present her credentials to the president N.Enkhbayar on September 2. Honorable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada announced this appointment on July 10, 2008.

Anna Biolik (BA [Literature and Philosophy], Lycée Copernic, Katowice, 1971;
MA [French Studies], University of Cracow, 1975; PhD [Comparative Literature], University of Montreal, 1982) taught at the University of Ottawa before joining the federal government. Since 1984, she has worked for the House of Commons, the Secretary of State, the Department of Communications, the Governor General, Canada Post and Investment Partnerships Canada.

In 1997, she joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, serving in Ottawa as director of the International Business Opportunities Centre and the Market Support Division. From 2001 to 2004, she served as consul general in St. Petersburg and, from 2004 to 2006, as ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Kazakhstan, with concurrent accreditation to the Kyrgyz Republic and to the Republic of Tajikistan. She currently serves as director of the Centre of Learning for International Affairs and Management of the Canadian Foreign Service Institute. She is married to Terence Hargreaves.

North American-Mongolian 11th Annual Investors Conference is to be held from 17 to 19 September at the Kempinski Hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

Her Excellency Anna Biolik, Canada’s new ambassador to Mongolia, will deliver the opening address at the NAMBC’s 11th annual Investors Conference on the morning of September 18. Other major Investors Conference speakers include Michelle O’Neill, the US Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade and US Ambassador Mark Minton.

Prime Minister S.Bayar Receives Russian Ambassador

S.Bayar, Prime Minister of Mongolia received Boris Alexandrovich Govorin, Ambassador Extraordinary-Plenipotentiary of Russia to Mongolia. Ambassador Extraordinary-Plenipotentiary B.A.Govorin, informed on the knotty affairs in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and handed over the Statement of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia on recognition of the independence of these countries by Russia. In addition, he addressed the issue of participation of the Cabinet leader to “The Fifth Baikal Economics Forum” to be held in Irkutsk, Russia.

Noting, “The Government of Mongolia thinks that it is important to solve the South Ossetian and Abkhazian affairs under the principle of respecting the rights and interests of the residents of these countries to be calm and amiable”, the Prime Minister of Mongolia S.Bayar informed that he planned to take part in “The Fifth Baikal Economics Forum”. Also he added, “During the Forum, authorities of Russian Government and ministries as well as regional delegates shall be seen and views shall be shared on bilateral cooperation and relationship issues. I believe that you, Ambassador would help us on providing us opportunities to run business talks and negotiations since we plan to get there on September 9 and return on same day. SCO members sign several documents

The Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is continuing in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
President of Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, China and Uzbekistan attended the session of the Council of heads of states of the SCO member states. Representatives of observer states – India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan – and honourable guests joined them later.

The participants of the summit discussed perspectives of development of trade-economic cooperation and humanitarian partnership, issues on combating terrorism, drug trafficking and transnational crime, political and legal aspects of the SCO expansion.

On the result of the session, several documents on cooperation within the framework of the SCO, joint communiqué and Dushanbe declaration was signed.

Dushanbe declaration included separate point on South Ossetia. The SCO member states expressed their concern and supported the role of Russia in peace-keeping and cooperation in the region.

The 22nd Pyongyang international table tennis tournament opened at the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday.

About 60 players from four countries including Mongolia, DPRK, China and India competed in six events.

“The tournament, beginning from 1981, has played an important role on building up international friendship and popularizing PingPong in the DPRK,” said Ri Yin Ho, an official from the sports commission of the DPRK.

The tournament was due to close on Monday.

ITEM 8.01. OTHER EVENTS It has recently been discovered by Mongolia Energy Limited (”MEL”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uranium 308 Corp. (the “Company”), that Lin Dong Hong, now a former director of the Company, fraudulently transferred a 20.53% ownership of Tooroibandi Limited (”Tooroibandi”), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MEL, to Xinjiang Ridong Mining Investment Co. Ltd., a Chinese company that is owned by Lin Dong Hong, under Mongolia’s Foreign Investment and Foreign Trade Authority Resolution A-2783. Therefore, MEL has terminated the employment of Lin Dong Hong as the Executive Director of Tooroibandi and authorized Mongolian attorney D. Enkhtur of the law firm of Lehman, Lee & Xu to turn over evidence of Lin Dong Hong’s fraud to the Ulaanbaatar Prosecutor’s Office.

Asashoryu wins Mongolian sumo exhibition tournament

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia — Yokozuna Asashoryu claimed victory before a packed crowd on the final day of the Japanese grand sumo tour of Mongolia on Thursday, after defeating fellow Yokozuna Hakuho in a playoff.

Asashoryu faced Hakuho, who had scored a victory the previous day, in the final bout at a circus facility to decide the overall winner. He claimed victory by hurling Hakuho out with an over-arm throw, and received the president’s cup from Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar.

“I’m thankful to the people of both countries (Japan and Mongolia) who love sumo. Bayarlalaa (Thank you),” a tearful Asashoryu said after his winning performance. Read the rest of this entry »
